W2: Condition/Problem

  • We go to coffee shops on a daily sometimes, they exist all around the world. Something about coffee shops’ atmosphere is conductive to conversations and creativity. People accomplish goals in a coffee shop, it is an ideal meeting place and it augments friendships and strengthens sociability. I looked back through the time to see where coffee shops started and how much the idea of a coffee shop has changed regarding to latest generations. Visiting coffee shops is important because it is a lifestyle and some people tend to look at it as a sign of fashion. Moreover, it is a way to explore different cultures and it became a part of social contact. Most importantly, it plays such a large role in the community of Qatar’s social living.
  • My intent is to explore people’s behaviour on coffee shops through observations, photographic/visual documentation, survey and interviews (which explore the phenomenon from its many sides).

W1: Introduction

Why did I choose this topic? (Coffee, Culture & Communication)

I value coffee, as it plays an enormous role through my daily routine. As a result, I decided to include coffee to my topic. One day, while I was in one of my favorite coffee shops, I begun observing the society’s habits in coffee shops and I was curious to distinguish why people visit coffee shops often times. Later on, I started asking myself, is it because of the taste of coffee, or because of that its known as the place that gathers people, or because of the coffee shop’s atmosphere. A lot of questions popped to my head, after a long time of thinking, I figured out that coffee shops are the most popular and luxurious nowadays. After reading more about coffee shops, I looked back through time to see where did they first started and differentiated between today and the old days. Whereas coffee shops used to be the places of meeting musicians, artists and authors to share their different positions and interests. Eventually, I decided to overview, investigate, observe and discover the roles of coffee in our lives.

  • Coffee is a drink that has its origins in either Yemen or Ethiopia, depending on which source to believe. What is true is that coffee has become part of the culture of many societies, and it has also produced some very well-known brands such as Starbucks. However, not all coffee is the same, with Arabic gahwa being made from unroasted beans, and Turkish coffee being very strong and thick. There are also different types of coffee beans. Many people in Qatar go to Malls just to sit and drink coffee because it has become part of social contact. The Arabic coffee pot and small cup for gahwa are so much part of Arabic culture that it is impossible to imagine any gathering of men that does not begin with drinking gahwa. Therefore, coffee and coffee drinking habits are a topic that is interesting from a cultural and also a mild stimulant point of view.
